What is CPR and Is It Different from First Aid?

When emergencies happen, knowing what to do can make all the difference. Two common terms you often hear in medical emergencies are CPR and First Aid. But what exactly is CPR, and how is it different from First Aid? Let’s break it down.

What is CPR?

CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It’s a lifesaving technique used when someone’s heart stops beating or they stop breathing—often due to cardiac arrest, drowning, or sudden trauma.

CPR involves:

  • Chest Compressions to manually pump the heart and keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs
  • Rescue Breaths (optional, depending on training level) to provide oxygen to the lungs

When done immediately and correctly, CPR can double or triple a person’s chances of survival until emergency medical services arrive.

What is First Aid?

First Aid is a broader term that refers to the immediate care given to an injured or ill person before professional help is available. This can include:

  • Treating cuts, bruises, and burns
  • Assisting someone who is choking
  • Responding to allergic reactions or seizures
  • Stabilizing broken bones or sprains
  • Providing CPR when needed

In short, CPR is one specific technique that falls under the umbrella of First Aid, but First Aid covers many other types of medical situations as well.

CPR vs. First Aid: What’s the Difference?

Aspect CPR First Aid
Purpose Restart heart & breathing Manage injuries and sudden illnesses
Used When Heart stops, breathing stops Cuts, burns, choking, allergic reactions
Techniques Chest compressions, rescue breaths Wound care, bandaging, splinting, etc.
Training Needed Specific CPR certification General First Aid certification

Do I Need to Learn Both?

Yes—absolutely!
Emergencies don’t happen in neat little boxes. You may need to perform CPR and stop bleeding. Or help someone who’s choking and then perform CPR if they become unresponsive. That’s why many of our courses at CPR Plus First Aid combine CPR, AED, and First Aid training into one comprehensive session.

Final Thoughts

Knowing CPR and First Aid gives you the tools to act quickly, calmly, and confidently when every second counts. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, employee, or simply a concerned citizen—it’s knowledge that saves lives.
