The closest suburb to our training room
Banksia is a small suburb wedged between Arncliffe and Rockdale, with the Princes Highway on one side and the rail line running through it. It has its own station on the T4 Illawarra line, a compact local shopping strip, and a residential population that increasingly overflows from the higher-density development at Rockdale and Wolli Creek. Of every suburb we cover, it is the closest to our training room – five minutes by car, two stops by train.
CPR Plus First Aid runs nationally recognised CPR, first aid and education and care first aid courses at 18 Station Street, Kogarah. The teaching is entirely hands-on: compressions and rescue breaths on adult and infant manikins, training defibrillator use, the recovery position, choking management, and scenario work drawn from real situations rather than textbook examples. Individuals book a published date; workplaces, centres and community groups can have a trainer attend their own site instead.

Getting to us from Banksia
The training room is at 18 Station Street, Kogarah – roughly 5 minutes from Banksia, south on the Princes Highway through Rockdale and into Kogarah, then a right into Station Street. There is no shorter trip on our list.
By train it is two stops with no changes: Banksia and Kogarah are both on the T4 Illawarra line, via Rockdale, and Station Street is a two-minute walk from Kogarah station. For most Banksia participants the train is genuinely easier than driving, because it removes the parking question entirely. If you do drive, there is street parking on Station Street and the surrounding blocks plus the public car parks in Kogarah town centre – allow an extra ten minutes, as Kogarah is busy from early with St George Hospital traffic.

DRSABCD: the part people skip and should not
The sequence taught in every Australian CPR course is DRSABCD – Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation – and the two steps most often rushed are the first and the third. Danger means checking that you are not about to become the second casualty, which on the Princes Highway or in a car park is not a formality. Send for help means calling triple zero, or getting a bystander to do it, before you start compressions rather than after a minute of them, because the ambulance clock starts when the call is made.
The one that changes outcomes most, though, is Breathing. You are looking for normal breathing, and agonal gasping – the irregular, noisy, fish-out-of-water breaths that often follow a cardiac arrest – is not normal breathing. It is one of the most common reasons bystanders do not start compressions on someone who needs them. If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start compressions. Recognising that gasping is not breathing is worth more than any refinement of hand position.

For HLTAID009 the provider states a 12-month certificate validity period. Check what your own employer or regulator requires, as some are stricter than the minimum.
