CPR and first aid training a few minutes from Mortdale
Mortdale has two distinct halves and they generate quite different training needs. There is the village around the station and Morts Road – shops, cafes, medical and dental rooms, hairdressers, a lot of small businesses where one person is the entire first aid capability. And there is the industrial and light-manufacturing pocket, with workshops, panel shops, joineries and storage where the likely incident is a laceration, a burn or a crush injury rather than a cardiac arrest.
CPR Plus First Aid covers both. We run nationally recognised CPR, first aid and education and care first aid courses at our training room at 18 Station Street, Kogarah – eight minutes from Mortdale – and we deliver on site for workplaces and groups. Sessions are hands-on throughout: compressions and rescue breaths on adult and infant manikins, training defibrillator use, the recovery position, and scenario work drawn from situations that genuinely occur rather than textbook set pieces.

Getting to us from Mortdale
The training room is at 18 Station Street, Kogarah, about 8 minutes from Mortdale by car – one of the shortest runs of any suburb we cover. From Morts Road the usual route is across to the Princes Highway and north into Kogarah, then a right into Station Street.
The train is equally straightforward and needs no changes: Mortdale and Kogarah are both on the T4 Illawarra line, three stops apart, and Station Street is a two-minute walk from Kogarah station. Because parking around Mortdale station is tight in the morning, plenty of participants find it easier to walk to the train than to drive both ends. If you do drive, there is street parking on Station Street and the surrounding blocks plus public car parks in Kogarah town centre – allow an extra ten minutes, as Kogarah is busy early with St George Hospital traffic.

Severe bleeding: the control that trades workers most often get wrong
In a workshop the most likely serious incident is not a cardiac arrest, it is a bad cut – and the instinct to look at the wound is the thing that costs time. For severe external bleeding the sequence taught in HLTAID011 is firm, direct pressure over the wound, held continuously, with the casualty lying down and the limb raised where possible. Repeatedly lifting the dressing to check whether it has stopped disrupts the clot that pressure is trying to form. If blood soaks through, you add another dressing on top rather than removing the first one.
The second point is about the kit. A first aid kit with nothing but small adhesive dressings is not equipped for a workshop laceration. Large wound dressings, a couple of triangular bandages and disposable gloves are the difference between managing the injury and improvising. Sites in the Mortdale industrial area are expected to match the kit contents to the actual risk of the work, and it is worth checking yours against the incidents you can realistically imagine.
