CPR and first aid training for Riverwood

Getting to us from Riverwood
Our training room is at 18 Station Street, Kogarah – about 12 minutes from Riverwood by car, generally King Georges Road south to the Princes Highway and then into Kogarah, with a right into Station Street.
By train Riverwood sits on the T8 Airport and South line while Kogarah is on the T4 Illawarra line, so the trip involves one change at Wolli Creek. It is still well under half an hour door to door, and Station Street is a two-minute walk from Kogarah station. If you drive, there is street parking on Station Street and the surrounding blocks plus the public car parks in Kogarah town centre. Kogarah is busy from early because of St George Hospital traffic, so allow ten minutes more than the map estimate.

CPR on an older casualty: what carers most often hesitate over
The hesitation we hear most often from Riverwood care workers is a fear of breaking ribs on a frail, elderly casualty. It is a reasonable worry and the honest answer is that rib fractures do sometimes happen – and that they are not a reason to hold back. Compressions must be deep enough to move blood, roughly a third of the chest depth, and inadequate compressions are the far greater risk to someone in cardiac arrest. A fractured rib is survivable. An unperfused brain is not.
The related point that actually changes practice: check whether the person you care for has an advance care directive or a documented resuscitation plan, and know where it is kept before an emergency happens. In a care setting that document is the thing that determines whether CPR should be commenced at all, and hunting for it during an arrest is the worst possible time to look. The course covers recognition, the DRSABCD sequence and handover to paramedics; your organisation’s policy covers the rest, and both need to be understood together.
