Ten minutes from the training room: CPR and first aid for Sylvania
Sylvania is the first suburb you reach coming into the Shire over Tom Uglys Bridge, which makes it the closest of all the Shire suburbs to our Kogarah training room – a genuine ten-minute run rather than a generous estimate. It is also a suburb defined by water. Sylvania Waters and the canal frontages, the marinas and boat ramps along the Georges River, and the swimming pools that come with a lot of the housing stock all mean the local risk picture skews towards drowning and water incidents more than most inland suburbs.
CPR Plus First Aid delivers nationally recognised CPR, first aid and education and care first aid courses for Sylvania residents, workplaces, childcare centres and marine businesses. Every session is hands-on. You practise compressions and rescue breaths on adult and infant manikins, use a training defibrillator, learn the recovery position, and work through realistic scenarios rather than sitting through slides.

Getting to us from Sylvania
The training room is at 18 Station Street, Kogarah – about 10 minutes from Sylvania. From the Princes Highway it is straight north over Tom Uglys Bridge through Blakehurst and into Kogarah, then a right into Station Street. Of every suburb we cover, this is one of the shortest trips, and even in the morning peak it rarely becomes a problem.
Sylvania has no railway station of its own, so if you would rather not drive the options are the buses along the Princes Highway towards Kogarah and Hurstville, or a short drive or lift to Miranda station and a direct T4 service to Kogarah. Most Sylvania participants drive, and there is street parking on Station Street and the blocks around it plus public car parks in Kogarah town centre. Allow an extra ten minutes on a course morning, because Kogarah is busy early with St George Hospital traffic.

Backyard pools: the five minutes that decide the outcome
For a child pulled from a pool, the single most useful thing a bystander can do is start rescue breaths and compressions immediately rather than waiting. A drowning arrest is hypoxic – the problem is missing oxygen, not an electrical rhythm – so breaths matter more than they do in a typical adult cardiac collapse, and compression-only CPR is a weaker substitute here than it is on a footpath. This is precisely why the HLTAID009 practical assessment includes rescue breaths on an infant manikin as well as an adult one.
The second point, and it applies to a great many Sylvania households: pool fencing and CPR signage requirements exist in New South Wales for private pools, and the sign is not decoration. If nobody in the house has actually practised the sequence on a manikin, the chart on the fence is a reminder rather than a skill. A short course changes that, and it is the one piece of preparation that cannot be bought or installed.

If you would also like to be able to manage bleeding, burns and allergic reactions, HLTAID011 Provide First Aid includes the same CPR content.
What does it cost?
HLTAID009 is $50.00, HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is $100.00 and HLTAID012 for education and care settings is $110.00. Group and onsite training is quoted on participant numbers.
Do you train marine and boating businesses?

How often does CPR need renewing?
For HLTAID009 the provider states a 12-month certificate validity period. Households usually treat it as an annual refresher before summer, which is when pool use peaks.
Get certified, and stay that way
