Hands-on CPR and first aid training for Gymea

Getting to us from Gymea
The training room is at 18 Station Street, Kogarah, about 15 minutes from Gymea by car. From Gymea Bay Road the simplest route is onto the Princes Highway and north over Tom Uglys Bridge into Kogarah. The bridge approach is the pinch point in the morning peak, so leave a little earlier than the map suggests for a 9am start.
By train there are no changes at all. Gymea station is on the T4 line and so is Kogarah, so you board once and walk two minutes from Kogarah station to Station Street. Given how tight the parking is around Gymea station itself, plenty of participants find the train easier at both ends. If you drive, there is street parking on Station Street and the surrounding blocks plus the public car parks in Kogarah town centre – allow an extra ten minutes because Kogarah is busy from early with hospital traffic.

Child and infant CPR is not just adult CPR done gently
The most useful thing a Gymea parent can take away from a course is that the technique genuinely changes with the size of the casualty, and not only in force. For an infant, compressions are delivered with two fingers or two thumbs at roughly a third of the chest depth; for a child, with one or two hands depending on their size. More importantly, the cause is usually different – children and infants far more often arrest because of an airway or breathing problem rather than a cardiac one, which is why rescue breaths carry more weight in a paediatric arrest than in an adult collapse.
That is also why choking is covered in the practical rather than glossed over. Back blows for an infant, the correct positioning, and knowing when the situation has moved from effective coughing to a genuine obstruction are the skills most likely to be used in a household with small children – and they are skills that degrade quickly without a refresher.
